Dr. Marco Minghini obtained a BSc degree (2008) and an MSc degree (2010), both with honors, in Environmental Engineering at Politecnico di Milano. In 2014 he obtained his PhD with merit in Environmental and Infrastructures Engineering at Politecnico di Milano with a thesis on the use of open source software, including mobile data collection and virtual globes for Volunteered Geographic information (VGI) science applications. From 2014 to 2018 he worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the GEOlab of Politecnico di Milano, Italy. Since August 2018 he works as Project Officer at the European Commission – Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Ispra, Italy, supporting policies on geospatial data sharing/interoperability as well as the implementation of the INSPIRE Directive.
He is a researcher, educator and advocate on open source software and open data. He became an OSGeo Charter Member in 2015. He was the responsible and point of contact of the GEOlab for the Geo for All network. He is also an active OpenStreetMap (OSM) mapper, a member of the Italian OSM community, a Voting Member of the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT), the former Faculty Advisor of PoliMappers and the Co-chair and organisers of the Academic Track at the OSM’s State of the Map conference since 2018. From 2018 to 2021 he was a member of the Editorial Board of the journal Open Geospatial Data, Software and Standards. Since 2022 he is the Chair of ISPRS Intercommission Working Group “Open innovation in Geospatial science and Remote Sensing”. He is a regular participant and presenter at global and local FOSS4G events. He was the Secretary of FOSS4G Europe 2015, a member of the Local Organising Team of FOSS4G 2022 and a Co-chair of the Academic Track at FOSS4G 2022 and FOSS4G 2023.
