Claudio Iacopino

Biography

Claudio Iacopino obtained a M.Sc. in Software Engineering in 2007 with first class honours at the Università Politecnica delle Marche in Italy. He soon joined the European Space Agency as a Young Graduate trainee at the ESRIN centre, in Rome where he was involved in the ground segment of the Earth Observation missions. In 2009 Claudio joined the European Space Operations Centre, ESOC in Germany. Here he worked on AI prototypes for Space Operations and in 2014 he was awarded with a PhD in Automated Space Mission Planning & Scheduling systems by the Surrey Space Centre, of the University of Surrey in the UK where he explored bio-inspired algorithms to efficiently manage large constellation missions. He spent the following five years working for Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd as technical leader in R&D projects concerning ground segments for future large constellation missions. In 2019 he joined the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts – ECMWF to investigate cloud technologies to build a new infrastructure to handle the large amount of weather and climate data produced at ECMWF and enable multi-domain workflows across different Clouds and HPCs centres.

Claudio is currently working at the European Space Agency site ESRIN since 2022 in the Digital Platform Section, focusing on interoperability between EO cloud platforms, including geospatial data cubes and reproducibility of EO workflows and applications. He is actively involved in the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), managing ESA’s contribution to open standards development and promotion. He is a strong advocate for digital innovation, open science and open innovation and as part of this endeavour, he leads the EO Exploitation Platform Common Architecture (EOEPCA) project, promoting open governance and community based open source development.
